Internet Phone – Join the Wave of Future!

If you are interested in the latest computer technologies, you must have heard about VoIP. Voice over Internet Protocol is an emerging set of applications that allows users to make phone calls over the Internet. It is actually starting to replace traditional telephone networks, as some individuals and businesses are choosing to cancel their traditional telephone lines and take advantage of VoIP.

VoIP was originally developed to enable voice communication between PC users in various locations. Though it still follows this purpose, it has been further developed into a phone network in its own right. Users of VoIP can call anywhere in the world and receive calls on phone sets connected to the Internet or Local Area Network.

The technology started in 1995 when Israeli computer enthusiasts launched first computer-to-computer VoIP connection. Today there are many VoIP services available for home and business use. Some of them still rely on PC-to-PC connections, but many also offer such services as computer-to-phone and phone-to-phone.

Internet Phones – Make Your Phone Bill Shorter!

There are internet phones that plug into the sound card or USB port of a PC. These phones may have number pads and ringers, which allow you to use them just as regular telephones. The computer can be completely bypassed by connecting a telephone directly to a broadband modem. So, how does VoIP work? The first step in using VoIP is converting voice into digital data. This is achieved by “sampling" the voice – dividing the analog sound signal into discrete steps, which can be assigned a number value. Once the voice is digitized, the data can be compressed. This compressed digital data is split up into “packets" that can be transferred over the Internet. The packets contain information about their origin, their destination, and a timestamp that allows them to be reconstructed in the correct order. Once they reach their destination, they are converted from digital back into analog so that the receiving person can hear your voice.

In order for voice data to be transmitted without delays, a high-speed Internet connection is a must. Many households and businesses are already using broadband (either DSL or cable) so adding VoIP is relatively easy.

VoIP is considered to be the wave of the future and it is believed that every business, government and individual citizen will be using a VoIP phone soon – it is just a matter of people learning about the new technology.
